At SilverBack Shooting Club, we are dedicated to promoting safe and responsible shooting practices. Our mission is to provide a welcoming coaching environment for both novice and experienced shooters. We encourage our members to pursue professional firearms training because we believe EVERYONE benefits from it.
We are a group of people who help each other shoot better, be safer, and have more fun while doing it. We promote ongoing professional firearms training, we help new shooters overcome the jitters so they can get more out of their first class, and we are dedicated to practicing what we have learned. We have a deep and personal commitment to firearms safety.
Our founder wanted to limit membership to people aged 60+, weighing 250+, shooting 1911s in .45acp as God intended, with 5 or more surgeries, and gray/silver hair growing from their back and shoulders. However, he was the only one with ALL the requisite characteristics. So now the only membership requirement is to be ABSOLUTELY safe with firearms.
“Silverback” is an insult once addressed to our founder in a class of young running and gunning studs, as described here: https://www.gunnuts.net/2014/10/08/graysplaining-or-how-to-spot-a-silverback/
Unfortunately, our Founder loved it, decided to embrace it, and has set about reclaiming the term for the folks who have learned a little something through trial and error (lots of error) and are willing to share what they’ve learned. “SilverBacks” hopes to shorten the learning curve for others and maybe even save them time, money, and energy in the process. We tend to be old, fat, and slow *, but our definition is all-inclusive; we are all potentially SilverBacks; age, gender, physical ability (or lack thereof), etc. has nothing to do with it.
*old, fat and slow still gets the job done as evidenced by the .45acp round fired from the 1911.
We stand on the shoulders of giants like: Lawrence Kane, Kris Wilder, Varg Freeborn, Rory Miller, Mark MacYoung, Peter Georgiades, Jim Fleming, Randy Cain, Louis Awerbuck, Larry Mudgett, Scott Reitz, Craig Douglas. And they also stood on the shoulders of giants like: Jeff Cooper, Rex Applegate, Fairbairn, Charlie Askins, Elmer Keith, Bill Jordan, etc.
Greg Ellifritz has a recommended reading list that is a good place to learn the martial lineage of the gunfighter: https://www.activeresponsetraining.net/recommended-reading
